High schoolers create chalk abstractions and charcoal "selfies"



High school art students began by using a phone selfie to draw an enlarged self portrait in charcoal. For many this was their first time working in this messy and challenging medium.


Next, students studied abstraction and breaking a photo (a portrait or landscape) into leading lines, shapes and colors. It was challenging for many students to work with chalk and preserve contrast and sharpness, but they persevered.
